Arawak Islands Ltd. is a small, Grenadian-owned company, which has been in existence since 1986. The company was initially set up to provide affordable quality perfumes for the local market.
Visitors to the island also liked the perfumes, and from this grew our present line, which now also includes hand-made pure coconut oil and spice soaps, body oils, insect repellants and incenses, all based on our local natural raw materials.
In addition, we have many combinations of other Grenadian products packaged attractively for visitors to our island and for export.
Grenada is known as the Spice Island, and grows a wide variety of spices such as Nutmeg (Grenada is the world's second largest producer), Cloves, Cinnamon, Pimento, Tonka Beans, West Indian Bay leaves, Turmeric and Ginger, as well as Hot Peppers and Cocoa.
We buy our spices either from the Nutmeg and minor spices cooperative societies or directly from small growers. When we receive spices from our suppliers, they are carefully cleaned and hand-sorted, then used whole, ground, or pounded for use in potpourris and flavored sea salts. A range of hot sauces, syrups, cocoa and honey is supplied by various small producers, then handfilled into small bottles on our premises.
While we cannot avoid the use of plastics in our packaging, we try to keep it to a minimum, and generally stay as "natural" as possible. In all of our products and packaging we give preference to locally produced items, buying from abroad only what is not produced in Grenada.
Our workshop is located in Frequente Industrial Park, St. George's. Here we employ 12 men and women.
All our employees are trained in most of the essential aspects of production, although they each have a main area of responsibility.
Training in tasks is complemented by frequent quality control and discussion. The daily tasks of production workers include cutting, sewing, stamping, hand-painting and ironing cotton bags, blending, bottling, capping and labeling perfumes, body oils and insect repellant, hand-stirring and cutting coconut oil soaps, sorting and processing spices, bottling syrups, hot sauces and honey, shrink-wrapping and packaging all our different products.
We are always happy to show visitors around and will do our best to explain the various activities below.
